New Year, New Doctor

So in case you aren't a huge Doctor Who fan or someone who loves one, you might not know that today they are announcing who will be taking over for David Tennant in the titular (heh) role on Doctor Who.   Except the thing is -- you could also just be British... and then you would definitely know... because the announcement -- which hasn't even been made yet -- is apparently being covered by major media outlets.

As Paul Cornell blogged, it was not always like this.  While, of course, the Internet makes it a lot easier for those of us on the other side of the Atlantic to get this news (I learned of the last Doctors of the original series in the fan publication The Whovian Times...no, I'm serious), even those in the UK have never experienced this level of interest in the announcement.  Like Cornell again said, it's "like the little hometown band dear to my heart is now playing stadiums.

And I wonder if those on that side of the Atlantic even know truly how large this is.  Sure, it's one thing for magazines like Wired to have coverage, but the damn news is being talked about in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety... before the announcement is even made.  This is huge.

And let's me be one of many to say this... it doesn't matter.  I mean it's very, very exciting, and I'm very, very excited to know.  But we can't judge a damn thing until we see the first episode.  As Simon Guerrier wrote, fandom tends to get overly excited about these things and there are always way too many doomsayers.  Like when they cast that blonde teen pop star in the role of Rose in 2004 and people said the show was doomed before it restarted.  Or when they cast that loud red haired comedian AND had the gall to bring her back.  It's not like she had maybe the best relationship with the Doctor since the show's come back or anything.

So I guess what I'm saying -- that even if the Doctor is black...or gasp, a woman... hold your fucking horses.  It's probably going to be fine.

Unless it's Rick Astley.  That would be stupid.

Except it would be the best Rick-Roll EVER!!
