• Charles Brogdon's "Hand-Made Hollywood" -- WOW! Television afficianados must heck this out.
  This project involves creating incredibly detailed miniature replicas of the sets for vintage sitcoms and soapsincluding all the set-lights and other pieces. It's freaking amazing. It'd be one thing to go for the obvious sets like The Brady Bunch or Seinfeld, but it has tons of super fun ones that are so detailed to be frightening. Personal favorites: The Facts of Life 'Over Our Heads' store, The Price is Right, Pyramid, AND Press Your Luck... and the Young and the Restless, with not only the Newman ranch (easily the oldest set on television now, right?) but both the Abbott AND Chancellor estate pools. You owe it to yourself -- and its creator -- to look at the whole photostream.

Trump wooing Lindsay Lohan...well, fortunately not THAT way

Despite my recent conversation with Rod Blagojevich at the local liquor store, I've never watched a full episode of The Apprentice, Celebrity or Otherwise. 

When it originally aired, sans "famous" people, I found The Apprentice particularly annoying long before I started to find Donald Trump horribly bothersome.

I've worked with enough corporate tool/suck-ups that I didn't need to see them on my television; at least in Survivor, some of the Type A folks look nice in their swimwear.

And though I've never actually sworn I'd never watch a Donald Trump program, I may have to renounce that oath I never took because, as the NY Post reports:

Lindsay Lohan has been approached by Donald Trump to star in the next "Celebrity Apprentice" season.

This could save her life. Or be a train wreck of epic proportion. Either way I'm in.

• Trove of Long-Lost Silent Films Returns to America - NYTimes.com
  "A late silent feature directed by John Ford, a short comedy directed by Mabel Normand, a period drama starring Clara Bow and a group of early one-reel westerns are among a trove of long-lost American films recently found in the New Zealand Film Archive." These films were originally thought completely lost, which makes it even more awesome. Also awesome: "The preserved films will be made public through archival screenings and as streaming videos on the preservation foundation’s Web site, filmpreservation.org. "

  According to an anonymous sailor (which in another context sounds totally dirty, and not in an oil spill sort of way), this is what Jimmy Harrell, the Deepwater Horizon installation manager was yelling into the phone after the sailor's boat saved them. Mother Jones's coverage of the spill is a lot better than most, less annoying than NBC Nightly News, but also more angering.

  Josh Marshall hits the nail on the head as to why I was troubled by the media coverage of the two wannabe Jihadists that were picked up in NJ this weekend. Yes, they may have turned out to be bad news. But there's a lot of idiots out there (white supremacists, Christian evangelicals, etc.) that also talk a dangerous talk, and perhaps in some cases they should be followed too before actually doing anything wrong. And this metaphor works for me in explaining how I feel: "I remember back in college in the late 80s finding myself at a panel about rap music. And most of the experts... were going on about rap, with its mix of misogyny, puffing, willful young male aggression and occasional inchoate politics was an authentic product of inner-city African-American culture. And [agreed] until one guy, one of the music critics, basically called BS on the reining consensus, saying, 'Are you kidding? The white teenagers in the suburbs have all the same stuff. There it's just heavy-metal.'"

  In case your cat (who is grey and beautiful and a brat and named Dusty) does this, here's what one website says: "This is a more difficult behavior to explain, and some cats are more prone to it than others. Most feline behaviorists have come to believe that some cats find a slight odor to the plastic and/or film surfaces simply irresistible, and also that the coolness and texture of the plastic and/or film must feel and taste good on the cat's tongue. It may also be another form of trying to "nurse" - sort of a feline "oral compulsive" behavior." The last sentence might be most interesting -- especially if you cat used to try to nurse herself (to the point of rubbing herself raw) when she was a kitten.

  I grew up on the other side of the Iowa/Illinois border, but once I graduated high school ('93) I haven't paid much attention to state politics there (having only returned for the caucuses in 'o4) but when I saw Terry Brandsted, I thought, "God he can't have a kid running for governor, can he? In other words, when you're elected the youngest governor of Iowa, you can still be kicking around forever. // But is Palin really, really considering a presidential run? There's no money in it and the job is hard - I really can't imagine that she could handle it. Fuck, I think the Iowa Caucus and the NH Primary alone would be too much work for her.
