"The United Nations has appointed Earth's ambassador should aliens touch down in the near future. Their selection? Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman, who heads the UN's Office for Outer Space Affairs. Othman will discuss her duties in Buckinghamshire, England next week." On one hand, I can see why commenters online would mock this, and there is a lot of joke potential. On the other hand, to not have this position is to assume we are alone in the universe, and I really think that's one of those things that is (a) wrong, and (b) sending a bad message. Though some might view it as waste, I think that every thing we can do to remind everyone on Earth that we all share the same planet (which should be one of the main bits in the mission statement of the UN) is a good idea.
